Eyes are the most precious part of our organs as they open the first door for us to the outside world. We cannot imagine a world with darkness or fuzziness so we need to attach much importance to eye health. Eyeglasses are not the only choice for us if we know something about our eyes, a very delicate part of our body. Here are several factors which do harm to our eyes but we may not know.
1. Drinking
As we all know, smoking or drinking does great harm to our health. Many of us, however, do not know it is also harmful to our eyesight. For example, alcohol promotes the blood circulation and capillary expansion so we often see the cheek of drunken people flush red. Likewise, as skin around the eyes is so delicate that capillary around is rather small, capillary expansion may lead to broken capillary, thus affecting our eye health.
2. Smoking
Talking of the impact of smoking on our health, we may first think of respiratory disease. In fact, it is greatly harmful to our eyes. The most common phenomenon is amblyopic, which refers to eyesight less than 0.8. There are two reasons: firstly, hypoxia brought about by smoking leads to variation of the optic nerve fiber; secondly, tobacco tar caused by tobacco burning reduces the content of Vitamin B12 in our body, which is the essential nutrition of keeping the normal function of optic nerve. Combined by these two factors, it results in decreased eyesight of smokers or even blindness.
3. Computer or UV radiation
Nowadays in this modern society, most of us have to work with computer, incurring eye dryness or eye strain. Lachrymal gland of healthy eyes excretes lachrymal fluid to lubricate eyeballs but long-time focus on computer screen will accelerate lachrymal fluid loss. Excessive exposure to sunlight will also lead to all kind of eye disease such as cataract and also eye wrinkles. We should wear sunglasses or anti-UV glasses to shield our eyes from UV radiation.
4. Improper diet
Study shows that vitamin E, vitamin C, carotene contained in fresh vegetables and fruit can help prevent some eye diseases as these vitamins are anti-oxidants which can improve eye health and enhance night vision. If we are no diet, we could properly reduce the fat and starch intake and eat some vegetable and fruit but not as main dinner.
In fact, as long as we pay a little attention to these in our daily life, our eyes can get tender care and maybe eyewear is not that necessary for everyone.
